Abstracts are invited for:

  • Oral Presentations (in-person or online)
  • Posters (in-person or online)

Abstracts may be submitted without registering for the meeting. However, registration is required by 01 March 2024 if you are also submitting a grant application (note that this is also the deadline for early bird rates)

Grants

  • Conference participants can apply for a grant to support their participation in the IAU GA 2024.
  • The grant application is an optional part of the abstract submission form since submission of an abstract is required for grant applications.
  • Participants may be considered for grants from one or more sources of funding based on their eligibility but only ONE grant application is required.
  • Registration is a prerequisite to apply for a grant.

IAU GRANT

Guidelines for IAU Grants

  • IAU Grants are expected to be attributed to qualified participants to whom only limited means of support is available, e.g., colleagues from economically less privileged countries and young scientists.
  • IAU Grants are expected to be the seed money in ensuring the participation of a selected beneficiary, rather than adding comfort for colleagues whose attendance is already assured.

Eligibility for IAU Grants

  • Eligible participants for the IAU Grants need to submit (at least) one abstract to be presented at the General Assembly.
  • IAU membership is not required.
  • Grants are given only to participants with accepted abstracts.
  • All applicants should register for the conference before the grant application deadline and select the “pay later” option (no payment is required until the outcomes of the grants are known). In this way even unsuccessful grant applicants will still receive the lower early bird rate.

Selection for IAU Grants

  • The SOCs grade the application for its scientific merit. If a participant submits multiple abstracts, they will all be considered.
  • The IAU General Secretary allocates grants based on the overall funding available, the above criteria, and the input of the SOCs. The General Secretary informs the IAU Executive Committee of their decision.
  • The final allocation is expected to show a reasonable distribution of gender and country of work.

AFRICA GRANT

The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) and the National Organizing Committee of the IAU General Assembly 2024  (IAU-GA2024) invite Africa-based astronomers and students to apply for grants to attend this landmark event, as it marks the first time the assembly will be held on the African continent. These grants are an effort to promote the participation of Africa-based astronomers and students in this significant international conference, to foster participation, inclusion and growth in the field of astronomy within Africa. They are intended as seed funding to ensure participation rather than adding comfort for those whose attendance is already secured. The funding for these grants comes primarily from the South African Department of Science and Innovation, with additional support from the LSST Discovery Alliance (LSST-DA). An independent review panel will be appointed by AfAS, in consultation with the funders, to assess grant applications based on the eligibility and selection criteria.

Eligibility for Africa Grants:

  1. Residence and Institutional Affiliation: Applicants should reside, and be affiliated with an institution based on the African Continent.
  2. Abstract Submission and grant application: Applicants must submit one or more abstracts for the conference, and must complete the grant application questions, which are available during abstract submission.
  3. Membership: Membership of professional bodies such as AfAS or IAU is not required.
  4. Conference Registration: Applicants should register for the IAU-GA2024 before the grant application deadline, selecting the “pay later” option (this also ensures that even unsuccessful applicants benefit from the early bird rate).

Selection for Africa Grants: 

  1. Quality of Abstract: Preference will be given to participants with high quality abstracts that are relevant to the IAU-GA2024.
  2. Means of Support: Priority will be given to applicants with limited means of support or those based in (African) countries that are on the United Nations list of least developed countries.
  3. Inclusion: Selection will take into account gender and geographical distribution among recipients.
